    Dictionary for Catholic Singles

For Catholics singles who are dating and using online dating sites, there is such a need of a good dictionary. There is a lot of confusion out there when it comes to dating, courtship and marriage, especially for Catholics. We feel it is important to start working on a dictionary of terms that can help single Catholics clear up some of the confusion and have the ability to identify things more capably.

    Invitation to Contribute
Please help us to build a great dictionary for Catholic singles. We got it started, now you need to help us add to it. Any terms you would like to suggest and define would be greatly appreciated. This is an ongoing project that we want to build onto, and we need your help. Please contact us with your suggestion of terms needing definition and presentation in our dictionary.

    Catholic
First and foremost, one who acknowledges they are a sinner in need of a savior; who believes they have faults and weaknesses that need to be addressed; who believes all the Catholic Church teaches, 100%, when it comes to what we are to believe and how we are to live that belief; who works at practicing their faith and wants to get to die in the state of grace and get to heaven.

    Catholic Dating
Two Catholic persons of the opposite sex who are of legal age and spend time together in a way that respects the person, excludes premarital sex or inappropriate sexual expression, but rather values chastity and virginity, pursues attraction and making a connection, but also includes and openness to a serious relationship that can lead to marriage, and has friendship as the basis for their relationship.

    Catholic Marriage
One man and one woman who, under the normal laws of Church teaching on marriage, formally by their free will consent make promises of fidelity, permanence and openness to children before God by a Catholic priest within a Catholic church, that is a convent and contract that cannot be broken except because of the death of one of the spouses.

    Catholic Online Dating
Catholic person who use technology to come into contact with other Catholic singles for the purpose of getting acquainted with other Catholics, developing friendships and ultimately of meeting in person those of interest that the Catholic person hopes may lead to marriage.

    Catholic Singles
A baptized Catholic who is not yet married and is also free to marry in the Catholic Church, or who has decided to remain single as a vocation and has consecrated himself/herself to a life of celibacy in service to God and His people, typically as a priest/monk/nun/religious, but also possibly as a single person in the world, helping others through some position or cause that is more effective by remaining single.

    Chastity
The living of life without the use or expression of God’s gift of sexuality with another person before marriage.

    Courtship
When two people agree to be exclusive with each other to focus on determining if they should becoming engaged to be married by mutual agreement.

    Dating
The process of spending time with a person of the opposite sex in a way that pursues attraction and making a connection, but does not necessarily include openness to a serious relationship or marriage, and can often end in both persons agreeing not to see each other any longer or in friendship.  The modern and secular sense of dating also often includes the openness to pre-marital sex.  Though this has become a "norm" to the dating process, and has even been adopted by some Catholics during their dating processes, it is not at all part of the definition of dating, nor should it be an actual accepted part of dating for any follower of Christ.

    Marriage
One man and one woman who formally make promises to each other that are meant to last for the rest of their lives until the death of one of the spouses.

    Marriage-Minded
One who believes they are called to marriage as their vocation and is dating with the intention of meeting the person they will marry one day.

    Online Dating
The use of technology to come into contact with other single persons for the purpose of meeting someone offline and developing a relationship.

    Relationship
A state of connectedness between people (especially an emotional connection); a state involving mutual dealings between people. For those who hope for marriage, this an uncertain period of determining whether or not there is something `there` between the two that could lead to something more serious.

    Single
A person who is not married.

    Single Catholics
Same as “Catholic singles” and used interchangeably, only a different way to label it.

    Vocation
The formal act of offering oneself in service to God for the needs of another or others.  Marriage is the only vocation where a life of celibacy is not required.
